Quddus, Topu elected DUJ president, secy

Quddus Afrad of the Daily Purbokone and Sajjad Alam Khan Topu of Jamuna TV have been elected president and general secretary respectively of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) for a two-year term.

The election was held at the National Press Club in the capital on Saturday.

Chief election commissioner Kashem Humayun declared the election results following the counting of the votes.

Quddus Afrad bagged 650 votes while his rival candidate Abu Zafar Surjo got 646 votes and Sohel Haider Chowdhury secured 628 votes.

MA Kuddus has been elected as the vice president bagging 678 votes. His nearest contestant Khandaker Mozammel Haque bagged 446 votes and Atiqur Rahman Chowdhury got 420 votes.

Sajjad Alam Khan Topu earned 475 votes while opponent candidate Akhter Hossain secured 406 votes.

Khairul Alam has been elected as the joint secretary bagging 769 votes while his rival candidate Moniruzzaman Ujjal got 538 votes in DUJ election.

The other elected office bearers are: Ashraful Islam (treasurer), A Jihadur Rahman Jihad (organising secretary), Asaduzzaman (publicity secretary), Dulal Khan (sports and cultural secretary), Sohali Chowdhury (public welfare secretary) and Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury (office secretary).

The members who have been elected are: Suraya Anu, GM Masud Dhali, Sakila Parvin, Shahnaj Parvin Alice, Raju Hamid, Ibrahim Khalil Khokon, Solim Ullah Solim, Ajit Kumar Mahalder and AM Shahjahan Miah.

The voting began at 9:00am and continued till 5:00pm. Among 3,160 voters,  2,043 voters cast their votes in the biggest unit of BFUJ-Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists.

A total of 89 canditates contested in the elections of the professional body of journos.
